How to Read the Two Digits

IP stands for Ingress Protection, defined under IEC 60529. The first digit rates solids on a 0 to 6 scale, ending at dust tight. The second rates liquids on a 0 to 9K scale, ending at close-range high-pressure, high-temperature jets. An X in either position means that side was never tested, not that it passed. Why IP Ratings Matter for Vapor Tight Lighting

Vapor tight fixtures live where standard lighting fails: food processing lines, cold storage, parking garages, car washes, tunnels, wastewater plants, and manufacturing floors. In those spaces the enemy is rarely the LED. It’s what gets past the gasket. Moisture that reaches the driver causes corrosion, flicker, and premature failure. Dust that settles inside traps heat and shortens fixture life.

Choosing correctly means matching the number to real exposure, not buying the highest one available. IP65 covers rain, mist, and routine housing. IP66 is the benchmark of industrial washdown. IP67 and IP68 address standing water and submersion, though neither is automatically better for a ceiling-hung fixture facing a pressure washer.
